Write a handout template

Clinic admins write the handout templates staff fill in for each patient. Start from one of houndkit's ready-written handouts, or write your own.

Add one of houndkit's handouts

1. Go to Clinic Settings → Docs → Handouts.
2. Under houndkit handouts, click Add next to one, or Add all.

Adding a handout copies it to your clinic. You can reword your copy without changing houndkit's original.

Write your own

1. Click New template, or Edit on an existing one.
2. At the top, name the handout and, if you like, pick a Category.
3. Write the text. Type / for headings, lists, tables, pictures, checklists, callouts, and paper lines for the client: Signature line, Initials block and Date line.
4. Put anything that changes per patient in curly braces, like {patient name} or {recheck date}. Each one becomes a blank staff fill in. Click the chips above the editor to drop in common blanks, clinic info, or Directory practices.
5. Click Save handout.

Questions

Use the Questions tab when part of the handout depends on a choice, such as anesthesia or sedation.

1. Click + Yes / no question or + Question with my own answers.
2. Name the question, then give each answer the text it should print.
3. Tick Required if the handout can't print until it's answered, or Pick any to allow more than one answer.
4. Back on Document, use the Answer button to place the chosen text where it belongs. If you don't place it, it prints after the main text.

Add-ons

On the Add-ons tab, add optional sections staff can tick, like extractions on a dental handout. A ticked add-on prints at the end unless you place it with Answer.

Blanks

The Blanks tab lists every blank. For each one, set what it Starts as, and what happens If staff leave it empty:

• Must be filled in: the handout can't be printed, copied or saved as a PDF until it's filled.
• Print something else: prints the stand-in text you give.
• Leave it out: prints nothing, and drops the line if that's all it held.
• Print the blank: prints the blank itself, so a missed one is obvious.

Check your work on the Preview tab before saving.
