Take vitals and log ins and outs

Updated September 30, 2026

You can record vitals, feeding, walks, urine, stool, vomiting and owner calls on any patient, whether or not a doctor ordered them. Each entry lands on the chart at the time you give it.

Take vitals

  1. On the patient's sheet, find Quick vitals and tap Take vitals.
  2. Check the Time done, or tap Now.
  3. Fill in the readings you took: Weight, Temp, HR, RR, MM, CRT and Pain. Leave the rest blank.
  4. Add a note if you like, such as "panting".
  5. Tap Log vitals.

A reading outside your clinic's normal range for the species turns red as you type it, and stays red on the chart, the board card and the Quick vitals card. It's a nudge to look again. It never stops you saving.

You can also click a square in a vitals row on the chart to enter that reading at that hour. If a doctor ordered a vitals check, tap Take vitals on the order in the Orders list and the box asks only for the readings that check needs.

Log ins and outs

The Quick log card has a button for each of your clinic's checks. By default these are Fed, Water, Walk, Clean kennel, Clean litterbox, Urinated, Defecated and Vomited. Your clinic may have renamed or added to them.

  1. Tap the check, such as Walk.
  2. Check the Time done.
  3. Under Tap any that apply, pick as many quick options as fit, such as Urinated and Defecated.
  4. Add a detail if you like, such as "soft stool".
  5. Tap Log it.

To log at a particular hour, click that square in the Ins / outs rows on the chart instead.

Record an owner call

The blue button in Quick log (by default Owner contacted) records a conversation with the owner. Pick how it happened, such as Called or Voicemail, and write who you spoke to and what you told them.

The board card then shows when the owner was last updated, so the next person knows whether a call is due.

Note

This is a record only. houndkit doesn't call, text or email the owner.
