Add a trainee and follow their progress

Updated September 30, 2026

Training management can put a teammate on a role's plan, pick their mentors, and follow how they're doing. Their plan and mentor check-ins are laid out automatically from the role.

Add a trainee

  1. Go to Training → Trainees and click Add trainee.
  2. Choose the Trainee.
  3. Pick their Role. houndkit suggests one from their Groups.
  4. Add one or more Mentors. Mentors file check-in feedback, and can sign off skills if your clinic allows it.
  5. Set the Start date, and a Target end if you want one. Leave it blank to use the plan's default.
  6. Click Start training.

Check-ins are scheduled after the modules set on the role's plan, with the first mentor. You can move them afterwards.

Follow along

The Trainees tab lists everyone in training. Use the Status filter to show In training, Behind, My mentees or Completed, and Role to narrow it down.

Click a trainee to open their panel. The Plan tab shows:

  • How many skills are done, which module they're in, and anything behind.
  • Links to their onboarding and self-assessment, if they have one.
  • Their whole plan, module by module, with sign-off buttons where you're allowed to use them.

Managers and mentors also see a Check-ins tab. The trainee never sees it. See Sign off skills and file check-ins.

Finish or change training

These buttons are for training management, at the bottom of the trainee's panel:

  • Mark training complete: finishes the plan. If skills are still open, you're asked to confirm.
  • Reopen training: puts a completed plan back in progress.
  • Edit: change the role, mentors or dates.
  • Remove: takes them out of training. Their skill sign-offs are kept.

Tip

Mentors see the Trainees tab too, but only for people they mentor.
