Take and grade competency tests

Updated September 30, 2026

Competency tests are timed, then graded by one person and confirmed by another before the result is released. Here's how each side works.

Take a test

  1. Find the test on your plan in My training and click Take test (or Retake).
  2. Read the panel: number of questions, time limit, pass mark, and what it covers. Review those SOPs before you start.
  3. Click Start — the timer begins now when you have enough time.
  4. Answer the questions. Your answers save as you go.
  5. Click Submit test. If you leave questions blank, you're asked to confirm.

If time runs out, whatever you've answered is submitted and the test closes. Your result shows in Training once it's been graded and double-checked, and you're notified when it's released.

If a test has a limit on attempts, the panel tells you which attempt this is. A retake opens once a failed result is released.

Grade a test

Only people who can sign off skills grade tests, and never their own.

  1. Go to Training → Trainees → Tests. The count on the tab shows how many are waiting.
  2. Use the Queue filter: To grade, Second check or Results.
  3. Open an attempt. Pick-one and pick-all questions arrive already scored; adjust if needed.
  4. Score written answers against the rubric and add feedback for each question if you like. Feedback is shown to the trainee.
  5. Add Overall feedback (shown to them).
  6. Click Save draft to come back later, or Send for confirmation.

Confirm a grade

A second person has to confirm every grade. If you graded it, someone else needs to confirm it.

  1. Open the attempt from Second check.
  2. Review the marks.
  3. Click Confirm & release to [name], or add a Note for the grader and click Send back.

Once released, the trainee sees their score, whether they passed, and your feedback. A pass also shows on the skills the test covers.
